Mabberley Text

Paradisus: Hawaiian Plant Watercolors brings together 60 full-page botanical watercolor plates by Geraldine King Tam, pairing Hawaiian native flora with plants introduced to the islands. Tropical fruit trees and flowering vines are a particular strength here, with close visual attention to split-fruit cross-sections, tendrils, and flower anatomy. The cover reproduces Tam's Yellow Passion Fruit, Passiflora edulis ‘Flavicarpa.’

David J. Mabberley supplies the botanical text, and James J. White contributes the foreword. The illustrated sequence ranges from naupaka, ‘ulu, kukui, noni, mango, soursop, yellow passion fruit, and macadamia to frangipani, Chinese hibiscus, orchids, gingers, bougainvillea, and rainbow shower; an appendix provides taxonomic notes on the plates. A poem by Tam's late husband, landscape painter and poet Reuben Tam, is included. Born in Toronto, Tam studied at McMaster University and Columbia University Teachers College, worked in media including etching, lithography, architectural drafting, textile design, and jewelry, and moved permanently to Kauai with Reuben Tam in 1980. After Hurricane Iniki in 1992, she donated a substantial body of her original watercolors to the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation in Pittsburgh.
Publication Details

Published by the Honolulu Academy of Arts, Honolulu, Hawaii, 1998.

Hardcover; no dust jacket.

Watercolors by Geraldine King Tam; text by David J.
