It comes with its original insert card detailing the history of the reproduction, noting that the original sword was made by Lewis Prahl, Colonial Philadelphia gunsmith and cutler, under contract to the Pennsylvania Committee of Safety during 1775–1776 to supply Washington’s Continental Army with 1,000 swords. A second contract in 1781 called for 150 swords. The cavalry sword remained a valued weapon during the American Revolution and throughout the Civil War despite being obsolete as an infantry weapon.
