Item Description

Rare Lyceum Fridericianum Kassel gold medal circa 1886. Date is based upon the date written on the bottom of the original case with the pictured name. Medal is testing 18K gold, trace silver and the balance copper. Various scratches to the medal. I do not know if this medal is solid gold or gold over copper or another base metal. The only way to know for sure is to find a record of the medal or drill out a section of the  medal and test the metal. I am happy to consider what I would consider reasonable offers!

The medal is written in Latin: Grati Qvot Svpersvnt Discipvll. MDCCCXLVII. Carolo LVD. Richtero Lycei Cassell. Rectori. Nat. MDCCXXXVII. DENAT. MDCCCII.

A silver and bronze version of this medal are referenced in a book written by Jacob Christoph Carl Hoffmeister Google Translated as: Historical-Critical Description of all Hessian Munzen Medals and Brands that have become known so far in Genealogical Chronological Consequence Vol 2 Reference numbers in the book are 3050 & 3054. There is no reference in this book to a gold version of this medal at the time the book was published in 1857.

Notations at the time of above publication using Google translation:
Carl Ludwig Richter was born in Halle in the Saalkkreis on August 22, 1737, was employed in the Hessian community in 1760 as a teacher at the Pedagogy at Cassel and then as rector at the Lyceum Friedericianum founded there on August 14, 1779; he died at Cassel on May 9, 1802....

The statutes about this medal are: $. 1. “This foundation, created from contributions by several grateful students living in 1846, of the rector, Professor Carl Ludwig Richter, who died in 1802, is to bear the name of the Richter Foundation.....

....From the interest of the capital mentioned, medals of silver or bronze are to be minted by means of the imaginary stamp, but these are only given to students of the grammar school for this purpose, in such a way that the primary student leaving the university who, according to the judgment of the teachers concerned ( among whom at least ... the votes must agree) will have proven through diligence and morality during his entire stay in Prima, when he is discharged from the university as a rule. The director received such a medal....

...6. The award of the medal as well as the names of the recipients should be mentioned every time in the school program. - - - - -Cassel on March 12, 1847. signed Richard Harnier, Dr. Secret councilor and fountain doctor at Pyrmont. Wöhler, Councilor of State......other grateful students who participated in this foundation are Louis Harnier, v. Krafft, v. Lepel, 0. G. Director Engelhard, State Councilor von Rommel and others.

The plan of the whole foundation as well as the idea of the medal in its simplicity and meaning is the merit of the then high school director zu Cassel, Dr. Philos. Carl Friedrich Weber, since 1853 Professor of Classical Philology in Marburg, to whom the genuinely classical inscription on the reverse Grati quot supersunt discipuli has earned undivided praise for its brevity and beauty. The stamps were made by the coin engraver Wilh.

...In addition, a description of the medal is provided and notes that Privy Councilor Schwedes oversees the execution of the stamps by the court and coin engraver Körner zu Cassel.....
