Item Description

Rare Apple II TKC Joystick II K680-0002 The Keyboard Company Controller

Circa 1980's TKC Joystick II made for the Apple II computer by the Keyboard Company. Tan case which was probably a little whiter when first made. I can tell you the original owner was a smoker which was more common during the time period.

The center toggle control is not spring action, so it moves and stays wherever you move it to. Orange single push button goes up and down as it should. Black 3 position switch, one direction is spring back to center, center, and one position holds in place. The cable seems to be in good condition with what looks like a ground clip inline. The connector is a 16 pin connector and probably went into a board which i do not have. One prong is bent 90 degrees - I have not touched it - another prong is slightly bent.

Someone will need to go through and clean this up for proper use.

A little history on TKC courtesy of Apple1Notes and Mr Michael Muller who subsequently left apple in 1987. I have provided a summary overview of the history below:

Mr Michael Muller was a general manager working for Datanetics out of Fountain Valley California. Datanetics was a builder of keyboards for cash registers and desktop calculators during this time. They were purchased by IT&T in 1976 and around the same time period Steve Jobs dropped in and spoke with Mr. Muller about building keyboards for the Apple II product line. By the spring of 1977 Datanetics was in full production.

During this period Datanetics was quickly supplying keyboards to Mattel and other companies and most likely putting pressure on the supply chain for Apple. This resulted in Steve Jobs having a conversation with Mr. Muller about starting a new company that would be exclusively dedicated to supplying the needs of Apple's product lines. Thus was born the Keyboard Company more commonly referred to as TKC.

Given Apple II's initial marketing push was accounting, and Apple computers were missing a numerical keypad, TKC built a stand alone keypad that became quite popular with Visicalc users. Apples popularity was quickly growing with early gamer's and TKC introduced various joysticks that were sold through the Apple dealer channels.

By the Summer of 1980, The Keyboard Company had become such an integral part of the Apple supply chain that TKC was acquired by Apple for stock and became the Accessory Product Division (APD). Quite an interesting history and a wild time to be part of the computer industry!

Unknown working condition so assume it is currently not functioning correctly and therefore sold as is, as pictured so please ask questions.
