Rare ring estimated to be from the Victorian era. This 14K gold Masonic ring design appears to be from the Grand Period of the Victorian era. This example features an Old Mine Cut Diamond with an approximate weight of .75 to .80 carats mounted in a striking double eagle motif with a beaded setting. Surrounding the double eagle is a black enamel star burst display making this a very striking presentation. The sides of the ring feature a Scottish Right 32nd degree symbol with the other insert is missing and needing to be properly restored to its finished beauty.
The head of the ring measures about 15.36mm deep, 16.4mm wide and has a rise off the finger of about 5.35mm. The sizing area is about 4.95mm deep and about .90mm thick. There is a thin area in the band at about .60mm thick. The diamond is not high grade consistent with diamonds from the mid Victorian era and may be an older diamond that was re-purposed for this ring. The diamond cut, color and clarity have not been reviewed. Cut looks fair to good to my untrained eye with large carbon inclusions visible. The stone has one noted small nick in the diamond near the bezel edge visible under magnification.
This ring is really ideal for the Masonic member who wants to preserve and represent a piece of Masonic history. Ideally for a Mason in the Cincinnati Ohio community. This is a rare ring originating from the Cincinnati Ohio area made by a historic Local Jeweler.
This particular ring was crafted by the Joseph Noterman & Co out of Cincinnati Ohio. The estimated time period for the manufacture of this ring is the early 1880's however, Joseph Noterman was in business for nearly 50 years prior to 1898 and his firm was known for its diamond settings so the ring could be older just as easily as it could be newer given the piece was not dated. His son took over the business in the late 1890's when Joseph Sr. retired after his nearly 50 years in the business. It is not known by me whether that "nearly 50 years" was all under Joseph Sr.'s company name. The design suggests this ring is from the "Grand Period" (1861-1885) of Victorian jewelry and this period is only an opinion based upon design elements.
As is noted in The Jewelers Circular & Horological Review Circa 1898:
"There is probably no house in the country better known than Joseph Noterman & Co., manufacturing jewelers. It is the oldest in the city, and many heads of the newer factories got their start in this house. Joseph, Sr., has retired from active service after nearly a half century in the business in this city and the business is being carried on by his son, Joseph, Jr., who has also grown up in the house. They are known east, west and south for diamond mountings, which have been a large feature with the concern for the past few years. Cluster work has been a very popular demand this season."
Size: Approx 8.75
Weight: Approx 11.2 grams all inclusive
Hallmarks: 14K in the Joseph Noterman company mark.
Main Stone: Round Old Mine Cut Diamond, approx 5.8mm x 5.8mm x 3.8mm approx .75 to.80 carats estimated. The stone has NOT been removed from its original setting which would be the only way to note all issues, cut quality, weight/carat etc.
Secondary Stone: None
Notable: Soap and Water bath only. Shows wear and as noted needs restoration on one emblem - someone cleaned the area though some lead soldier remains that originally held the insert in place. There is a spot of residue on the head of the ring that will need to be professionally addressed. Some pitting to the enamel consistent with age and use. The band is slightly out of round. A thin area in the band should be addressed. A collection of scratches to the ring as would be expected of an antique ring.
All of my gold and silver is authenticated before listing for sale. This piece has been xray analyzed using a Niton XRF Spectrometer to ensure the metal makeup meets industry standards for solid gold jewelry. Where appropriate, acid testing has been used as well. You will not buy gold or silver from me that does not meet the industry standards for how the piece is marked unless noted in the listing.
Diamonds have been verified using a presidium diamond tester, they have not been sized or graded by a gemologist. All measurements of stones have been done using digital calipers designed for this purpose, are approximate and may not be exact.
