Victorian 10K Rose & Yellow Gold Aurania - B-C 1890 Indian Clubs Award Medal 15.6 Grams
What an interesting Victorian period medal. Features a mix of rose and yellow gold. The piece is well crafted and hand decorated with excellent detailing. Top badge says Aurania B C and the bottom area has the date 1890.
The BC stands for British Columbia in Canada, and the award is most likely a competition medal.
The top and bottom are cast finished pieces. The center features a pair of highly decorative crossed Indian clubs; this bit is hollow and soldered together so I believe it was custom made for this medal.
The lower badge at the top left facing area is missing part of the protruding point visible on the right side. Probably was caught in the o'ring and torn off. Multiple areas where on the back side the piece was tested over its life.
The design infers a weight lifting award using the old Indian clubs which would make sense give the British connection to Canada and India and the popularity of the club swinging teams. The only documentation I can find for Aurania in 1890 has to do with a ship, but I have no idea if there is any relationship.

Multiple techniques used for testing gold content have been completed to include multiple acid tests. All xray readings show consistently 9.8K gold. No variations of significance. The medal is unsigned by the maker, so there are no hall markings on the piece. I presume produced locally for the occasion.
This piece has been xray analyzed using a Niton XRF Spectrometer to ensure the metal makeup meets industry standards for solid gold or silver jewelry. Where appropriate, acid testing has been used. Any gemstones have been tested using a presidium gem tester and have not been reviewed, except where noted, by a gemologist so please assume they are lab produced stones. All measurements of stones have been done using a digital caliper, are approximate and may not be exact.
